Pinewood Shepperton revenues up 37%

LONDON -- Pinewood Shepperton studios has announced its revenues are up 37% in the first half of this year to 26.1 million ($43.1 million), compared with $31.3 million in the same period of last year. Film revenues for the company were up 68% from $17.7 million in 2010 to nearly $30 million, thanks to Warner Bros.' "Dark Shadows," "Wrath of the Titans" and "Gravity," and Pathe's "The Iron Lady," Hammer Films' "Woman in Black," Universal's "47 Ronin" and Fox's "Prometheus," which all lensed at the studios. Additionally, Pinewood Shepperton announced it is housing production for Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman," toplining Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Helmsworth, which has started production. Interim results for the six months ending June 30 also reveal that operating profit was up 128% to $10.9 million while its profit before tax stayed level at $2.5 million compared with last year. The studios have also begun development of an additional 30,000 square foot stage, which was approved by the board earlier this month. The new addition is estimated to cost around $8.4 million and is expected to be completed by the second half of 2012. The first half of the year has delivered a positive performance across the business with good demand from big budget films and large-scale TV productions," said chief exec Ivan Dunleavy. "Despite the current economic uncertainties, the company is performing strongly. Trading since June 30th has been buoyant and is expected to continue to perform well for the year as a whole. Our investment in infrastructure to support growth is ongoing and we look to the future with confidence." In July, Brit real estate, transport and infrastructure investment company Peel Holdings completed its takeover of Pinewood Shepperton, upping its ownership to 71.1% of the stock in the studios. The stake is still not enough to permit the Manchester, U.K.-based outfit, chaired by billionaire property developer John Whittaker, to delist the company from the London Stock Exchange and go private. Such a move would require 75% ownership of Pinewood. Contact Diana Lodderhose at diana.lodderhose@variety.com

Milla Jovovich Battles Face Blindness (True) in Trailer for Faces in the Crowd

Milla Jovovich has squared off against many insidious adversaries in her career, including zombies (Resident Evil), evil itself (The Fifth Element), and critics (The Messenger). So why is it that her latest foe, a real-life affliction known as prosopagnosia — which confuses a person’s ability to recognize the faces of friends and loved ones (or, in Jovovich’s case in Faces in the Crowd, the face of her would-be killer) — seem like the silliest and most far-fetched enemy of all? Prosopagnosia is a disorder in which one cannot recognize familiar faces, usually after suffering a trauma to the brain; Wired wrote about it in 2006, while author Heather Sellers penned her memoirs in 2010 about living with the affliction. So I don’t dismiss the idea of face blindness lightly as the silly horror movie device that writer-director Julien Magnat’s France-Canada co-production Faces in the Crowd makes it seem when a character in the trailer explains to Jovovich why everyone she knows, including herself, suddenly looks blurry-faced or like creepy clones. (Do you think when she looks into the mirror she goes, “Hey, is that the chick from Return to the Blue Lagoon?”) “What you’re experiencing,” a doctor explains, “is FACE BLINDNESS…” Duh-duh-duhn! I’ll give Milla this; she appears to be as committed to the set-up here as she was in the also-silly The Fourth Kind, but the “blink-and-your-husband’s face-becomes-a-stranger’s face” — or friend’s face, or nondescript serial killer guy’s face, etc. — thing gets gimmicky fast. And when was the last time a movie killer used a straight razor so much just in the trailer? Something tells me we’ve seen pretty much all the beats of this film already in just two minutes and 18 seconds of face-blurring, neck-slashing, Milla Jovovich-freaking out trauma. And if you think for a second there won’t be a twist ending, think again. Like Julian McMahon will let those Nip/Tuck slicing skills go to waste? VERDICT: Sigh. It’s too bad I’m not silly movie-blind and will watch anything Milla Jovovich is in, no matter what.

'The Help' Star Jessica Chastain On 'Tree of Life' & Her Breakthrough Year

Jessica Chastain has already been earning rave reviews for her work in 'Tree of Life,' and she looks to build on that impressive breakout performance with a very busy year. She is appearing in this weekend's big release 'The Help' and next, she'll appear in the highly-anticipated revenge drama 'The Debt' opposite Sam Worthington. After that, she'll be appearing on screen with Al Pacino, then starring in the Cannes-hit 'Take Shelter' and re-team with Worthington for 'Texas Killing Fields.' With a long slate full of acclaimed films ahead of her, Chastain took a few minutes out of her increasingly demanding schedule to speak with the Huffington Post about her life-changing 2011. From performing fun comedy to immersing herself in sadness, the actress revealed that the combined experiences of 'The Help,' 'Tree of Life' and beyond have had a transformative effect on the actress. Her role in 'The Help': Jessica Chastain: For 'The Help,' it was a big physical transformation for me, which was really scary, but then also, there was of course an accent, but I also, in addition to the accent, I really pitched my voice up, because in real life my voice is much lower... It's my first venture into comedy. The effect 'Tree of Life' had on her after filming: I was leaving that set and, so much of me leaving, I was so concerned about making it easier for the boys [her sons in the movie], who I'd become very close to, those three little boys, that I underestimated how difficult it was going to be for me to say goodbye to them, and so when we left, I was absolutely devastated, just emotionally so sad. I got on a plane and flew to Paris to take a French course because I needed a change of scenery. On preparing for 'The Debt': Making the movie was of course exhausting, but the most difficult part was the months before, because that was the whole research part of it. I was reading a lot about the Holocaust. I read about [Nazi Dr. Josef] Mengele and I read a lot about the medical experiments that they did, which were really atrocious. I hadn't been exposed to those kind of details before. I was just trying to soak up as much as I could of that, because of course Rachel would know. During that time, it was during the holidays, it was over Christmas and stuff, and even my mom asked me, 'Are you okay?' because I was so depressed, because how could you not be? Every day I would wake up and just start my work, which would be reading about this stuff for months. So I was in a really sad and dark place.
